Client: United Nations Environment Programme/Global Environmental Facility and the Ministry of Housing, Lands and the Environment, Barbados.

Description: Development of a Framework for Biosafety/ Biotechnology for Barbados, as a means of managing its local biodiversity and the potential implications of modern biotechnology in a manner compliant with the goals and objectives agreed to by the international community. Conducted assessments of the existing institutional and administrative arrangements for managing biosafety/biotechnology, developed and drafted an appropriate policy and administrative framework, prepared inventories of relevant data,

Challenges: The management of biotechnology risks is a relatively new area for Barbados. As a result, a critical task was to identify an institutional and legislative structure within which the subject could be addressed.

Ecoisle Solutions: In the absence of pre-existing arrangements designed specifically to respond to the challenges associated with biotechnology and biosafety, Ecoisle Consulting Inc. conducted a comprehensive institutional and legislative review and there-from developed an institutional framework and a legal framework from which relevant policy could be implemented. A National Biosafety Policy was also drafted.
